Julia Wiley was born and raised in Hopkinton , MA. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986 with a BFA in printmaking. For almost 30 years Julia has worked exclusively in the painting genre of landscape.
“The house I grew up in was surrounded on three sides by woods. When I started painting landscapes, I was inspired by my childhood backyard. At first my imagery was stark tree silhouettes against a sunset sky, the so-called “Scary Trees”. Over time, I took my easel outside and started to investigate plein air painting in various New England locations. In the 1990’s I moved to the Bay Area. My work evolved to reflect the brilliant light and color of the scenery around me. Upon returning to Massachusetts in 2000, my work retained the bright colors, but became more minimalist in composition. I reduced the landscape I see to the bare elements of color, shape and line, leaving out most of the details. I expect to continue in this expressionist vein in the near future, recording the scenery around me as I see it.”
Julia currently works out her home studio in Whitinsville, MA.
